There's quite a bit that indicates a lack of research, or perhaps a lack of knowledge of the world. People do despicable things - alcoholism, domestic violence - seemingly with no repercussions, apparently just to establish their characters. There's swearing, but it's there under sufferance, because that's how people in the big, bad world talk.
On the other hand, it feels like it was written by a maiden aunt, possibly a nun - someone who doesn't get out a lot, who relies on the Daily Mail for their experience of the world. The multiple POV structure is pretty well handled too, and much of the dialogue is realistic in nature. It's overly wordy, but many crime and thriller writers write doorstoppers - Val McDermid, Henning Mankell, for example. On the one hand, it's actually quite well-written from a technical viewpoint: the words are strung together in a competent way, and the flow is okay.
